Question by Kari K: Who do I contact if I know a store is selling replica designer handbags?
A store in our area is selling designer (Versace, D&G, etc) handbags for under $ 150.00. I would love to know who I need to report this to.

If you know they’re counterfeit, I believe you can go to the police.

I think the local police department. If not, they can direct you to whom to contact.

Call the police or if you want to make sure before you report to the police, call the manufacturer to go investigate for their own good.

If you contact the local better business bureau or BBB they should be able to help you!

Try contacting the original retailers of the bags or let the authority deal with it by sending an email since a phone call wouldn’t be very important as an emergency would.

nobody likes a snitch. That is what they should cost if they were real. They are all made in China anyway.

I would start with the US patent office. They would be able to help you because they give every item made their patents, saying that those items are real, and there can be no other like them.
You could also try the US Trade and Commission Office. They could probably help you, too.

¥ou report it to noone. The 8-year-old in the sweatshop in China is making that bag for the designer for $ 3.50. If he makes a few knockoffs on his 10-minute lunch break, who are you to take that away from him?

If they are marketing them by the EXACT name then they are false advertising. You can contact the BBB (Better Business Bureau) or your Attorney General.

If however they are only marked as “Designer Bags” or have a blatant misspelling of a name the trademarked name (DandG for example) then they are not committing any crime at all and there isn’t much you can do.

If they’re not hurting you, I say leave them be. It’s not that serious. Chances are they need the money right now more than D&G and Versace.

I would make sure that those stores have the “permission” needed to do that before you get involved. Its not always wrong to make a cheaper brand of something. Its the same damn thing as Mac N’ Cheese. There’s Kraft (the original), and then there’s the food club brand or some other knock off brand. Its the same concept.

Then, if they are doing it illegally, call the police or go to the station and file a complaint.

Knock offs are not illegal. Only if they are using the registered trademark would they be breaking the law,if so contact your local district attorney’s office.
